Weirton Construction
Weirton has started a huge construction project on U.S 22 stretching from Harmon Creek to the veteran’s memorial bridge. Right lane closure began at the beginning of April and is said to last until August 2026. As of Monday April 20th, the state has issued a 13-million-dollar project to replace the Weirton steel overhead bridge lasting until October 2028.
The construction across U.S 22 is the replacement of the concrete going both directions. This work is affecting major traffic by completely stopping cars coming from the downtown Weirton exit and merging into traffic in the far-left lane. This traffic continues onto the middle of the bridge when the lanes split into three. Merging onto the bridge from Steubenville OH is pushing cars into the left lane leaving space for traffic to get onto the Follansbee exit continuing the highway with another accessible area for the downtown Weirton exit.
Weirton Police Department will continue to sit along the construction site to give citations for speeding and reckless driving. Many Weirton residents have complained about the traffic, merging issues, and which lanes the construction started on. The complaints went to social media but had no outcome on the matter. The surfacing project is $8.36 million and will continue until early august 2026.
On the opposite side of Weirton, the state has begun a demolition project of the route 2 Weirton steel overhead bridge on Monday April 20th. They started with the closure of the northbound lane and turning both southbound lanes into one using the second lane as the northbound lane. This lane closure will continue until April 2027. The bridge will still be open to the public, but they will have periodic shutdowns for maintenance or demolition then reopened to drivers. Police will also be watching the worksite and the alternative route along Weir Avenue for traffic violations. This is a $13 million project expected to last until October 2028.
