WSM wants and needs to hear from its audience so it can provide a healthy public forum to share perspectives on WSM content. If you have a strong reaction to WSM content and would like to share it with the public, consider writing a letter to the editor using the form below. GUIDELINES FOR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- INCLUDE CONTACT INFORMATION: Provide your full name, city/state, email address and phone number so WSM may verify your identity and contact you if necessary. Your contact information will not be printed in the with the letter. Anonymous letters will not be published.
- BE TIMELY: Write your letter as close to the date of the article’s publication as possible. Letters to WSM submitted 10 days or more after publication may not be published.
- BE KIND:Â Show respect for the opposite opinion and avoid personal attacks. Letters that contain derogatory language or degrade others on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation or disability will not be published.
- BE CLEAR:Â Make one main point and state it as simply and clearly as possible at the beginning of your letter.
- BE CONCISE:Â Letters should be about 1- 3 paragraphs and contain approximately 100-300 words.
- BE ACCURATE:Â Letters that contain false or misleading information will not be printed. Letters may not plagiarize another person’s work, infringe on copyright or intellectual property rights, or be written using AI. Letters must not contain libelous or defamatory remarks.
- PROVIDE SOURCES:Â Arguments are always most convincing when written with evidence that supports them. Be sure to verify that cited sources are reliable.
- OFFER SOLUTIONS:Â Simply expressing an opinion or complaining is not productive. If you have a perspective to share, contribute ideas for solving or improving the issue.
- FOLLOW THE LAW:Â Letters that violate any law will not be published. Letters must not threaten or advocate for any illegal or violent acts nor attempt to intimidate or harass anyone. Any threats will be taken seriously. If the WSM editorial board is concerned for someone’s safety, school administrators will be notified.
- RESPECT PRIVACY: Letters that infringe anyone’s privacy rights will not be printed. Do not disclose anyone’s confidential information without their advance consent.
- AVOID OBSCENITY:Â Letters containing profanity, vulgarity or inflammatory language will not be published.
- AVOID SOLICITATION:Â Letters should not contain promotion, advertising or marketing for yourself or on behalf of any other person or entity.
Submission of this form does not guarantee publication. Weir Student Media reserves the right to determine the content it publishes, to withhold letters at the discretion of the editorial board and to edit submitted letters for accuracy, clarity, length and style. By pressing submit, you agree to irrevocable and indefinite consent for publishing the content below online and/or in print.

All rising 9 and 10 grade students should take Journalism 1. Students in grades 10-12 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can also enroll in our new dual credit media literacy class.
