Sheetz Closing in Weirton
On February 1st, 2026, the Sheetz in Weirton closed for renovations. Some people may not care; it is just a gas station, but for weir high students it is not. It is the place to go; almost every student at Weir High school goes to Sheetz and hangs out. We get drinks and food and have fun for as long as possible, but not this time. Sheetz is planning on closing till July 2026. This will be the whole summer. A lot of adults are saying there are so many places to go in Weirton but to us kids there’s not, Weirton is a small town, there is no place for us to go and hang out for as long as we want.
First up I talked to a couple of seniors who have been going to Sheetz since they were freshman about how they feel about Sheetz being closed. First up I talked to Makenna Potock about her opinion she said, “I’m feeling upset about Sheetz closing, when you go to Sheetz you never know who you’re going to see and it’s always an adventure.” Senior Illionna Kirlangitis also says “I’m very upset about it I always look forward to going to Sheetz and getting good snacks and fun drinks.”
When interviewing students, I asked them about where the new hangout spot will be located on behalf of Sheetz being closed. Many students agreed they would probably go to starvaggis park and hangout, but it is not comparable to Sheetz because there is nowhere to get food like Sheetz. When the information was released, everyone did not know what to do. There are so many rumors going around on what the new Sheetz will have. People are saying that it will be smaller, have a drive thru, or completely different. We will not know for sure till July.
I talked some more Weir High students on what they think it is going to look like and what they may add. First up junior faith smith says, “I think they might add more variety of food and drinks, I also heard they were taking out the indoor seating area.” There are so many possibilities for what they could add and take away. Next, I spoke to junior Mila White about what she thinks the new Sheetz will look like, “I think it will be the same and I hope they keep the dining area and add an ice cream machine.” Finally, I talked to sophomore Alea White, and she hoped that they would add a popcorn machine like other Sheetz have. We all hope that Sheetz will be just as good as it was before.
