The Diocese of Wheeling Charleston celebrated a major milestone in its history. 175 years since it is founded in 1850, making this momentous year for Catholics across West Virginia.
Established on July 19, 1850, by Pope Pius IX, the diocese originally encompasses a vast region in what was when western Virginia, serving the pastoral needs of catholic faithful living in rugged Appalachian terrain well before West Virginia became a state.
“The Jubilee invited us to remember the past with thanksgiving, celebrate the present with hope, and look forward with renewed commitment to the mission entrusted to us,” one diocesan reflection titled “A Time of Grace.” When churches across West Virginia pealed their bells at 7:19 pm to commemorate the official date when the holy yearlong celebration reflects on the deep of faith and community service that have characterized the local church since its founding.
In celebratory mass on August 22 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling, Bishop Mark E. Brennan welcomed Catholics from across the diocese. The liturgy also marked the sixth anniversary of his episcopal leadership, blending gratitude for the last with hope for the future. Attendees shared reflections on the role of the church in their lives and the broader West Virginia community.

Tracing its origins to when West Virginia was still part of Virginia, the diocese has long played a vital role in building churches, schools, and ministries throughout the region. After its crest Jim spread over rugged terrain, growing even through the turmoil of the civil war and the transition to statehood. In 1974, the Vatican expanded and renamed it then diocese of Wheeling Charleston, designating the Sacred Heart Churches in Charleston as a co-cathedral.
