    Doug Torres, in his first year of teaching and serving as Weir’s band director, received the WTRF Golden Apple Award, which honors outstanding teachers in their viewing area recipient also will earn a grant of $500.

    “Mr. Torres has put forth great effort to re-invigorate the storied Tradition of The Weir High Band. He has exposed our band to new competitions and events that have provided wonderful experiences for our Band students.  In addition, the band has participated in many extracurricular events that enhanced the atmosphere of our school sponsored activities!” –  Head Principal Ted Arneault.

    After becoming the band director Torres brought back to life the Chorus after two years. He has also taken the band to many competitions after years of weir not participating in previous years. Torres is the third band director since the retirement of Ray Seifert in 2019.

    Torres has many plans for the band program he hopes to grow the Jazz Band into a full big band style Jazz band. Torres is trying to get a Wind Ensemble for a more unique playing opportunity. In the fall the Marching band will be going to more competitions and they hope to improve.

    Sophomore Lannea Dee, “He’s easier to communicate with. He has helped me so much with music. Taken the band students to competitions.”

    Splits his time between high school and middle school. Mr. Torres said he is going to use the money to fix instruments and purchase supplies for the band room.

    Torres said, “I was surprised and humbled to have received the award. When the news crew came into my classroom, I was not expecting it at all. Being a first-year teacher, I am trying to do what is best for the music program and help them along as best as I can. Being recognized for this was shocking and exciting all at once.”

    When Torres was in high school he played the tuba for his band. Torres knew he wanted to be a director someday. He finds that music is an escape from reality. Becoming a Teacher was also a dream said Torres. Growing up Torres grandma was a huge influence in my life as far as music. Torres said, “every decision I make now is in her honor.” His Aunt Rachel was also a huge reason for Torres want to become a teacher. Torres said, “She taught me to love every student for who they are, and to help anyone no matter what is going on.” But Torres past band directors in high school and during his time at West Liberty helped him make the finalize my decision on being a High School Band Director.

    Hello! My name is Hailey Hans. I am a sophomore at Weir High School.  This is my second year on WSM staff. I am on the girls track team. I serve as the class of 2026 treasure and WSM business Manager. I’m part of GAA and Pep club. Things I like are the beach, my cats, Zach Bryan, and the color green. I like journalism because it’s a way to share my opinion and also share information with others. I mostly like to write articles about thing that are important to me and I think my audience would find interesting. After high school I plan to attend WVU and major in criminal justice with a minor in journalism. I would love to one day be a investigative reporter.
