Andrew Bellevage, head of the English Department, was recognized as Hancock County Schools Teacher of the Year at the board meeting on Monday, May 8, 2023.

“When I was chosen at the county level, I was flabbergasted. Even today, it doesn’t seem to feel real yet,” Bellevage said.

He was first selected by his Weir colleagues at the February 17 Faculty Senate meeting, about which he said, “I was absolutely in shock! I am aware that there are many of my colleagues who work just as hard as I do, but it was validating to know that they recognize all my hard work.”

Bellevage always knew he’d become a teacher because he has admired the teachers in his life since his youth. He attended Wheeling Jesuit for his undergraduate degree and has two Master’s degrees: one in teaching and learning from Colorado State Global Campus and another in literacy education from WVU.

He has taught for eight years, four of those at Weir. Here, he has taught English 10, English 11, and Literature. He will add an AP Seminar course to his workload next year. He previously taught at St. Michael Parish School in Wheeling, WV where I taught grades 5-8.

“This is the greatest honor I have received in my eight years in education, and I take that very seriously,” Bellevage said. “My goal is to make my colleagues, my school, my county, and everyone else who has mentored or supported me proud.”

For anyone considering entering the field of education, he had this advice: “For anyone who may be interested in pursuing a career in education, search your heart for the true purpose of this work. If you do not actually enjoy it, it will be a miserable experience. If you find that you love it, even with the many challenges and stress involved, you will be happy to wake up every morning and walk into your classroom.”
