The Oscar’s Fiasco
And how one teacher at Weir feels about it
April 20, 2022
On the night of the Oscar’s, Chris Rock made a joke that would rock the world.
Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head enraged her husband Will Smith, leading him to walk onto the stage and slap Rock across the face and making this night one of the most memorable Oscar’s to date.
Rock claims he did not know about Pinkett Smith’s alopecia condition, though it was widely publicized.
News of this exchange spread like wildfire across the internet, and social media flooded with memes making fun of both sides. It seemed as if neither side was in the right. Now at Weir High there was someone especially upset by the story: wrestling and boys’ track coach Thomas Taylor, who is widely known at Weir to be a Will Smith fanatic. He has watched almost every single one of Smith’s movies multiple times and doesn’t hide his love for this notable actor.
Sophomore Ashlyn Conley, who is in Taylor’s fourth block health class, said, “Everyone can see how passionate Taylor is about Will Smith. He might as well be hanging up posters in his room of him.”
In an email interview, Taylor expressed his views on the situation.
He said, “First of all, this is two insanely rich guys acting horribly. They are so different from us that it is hard for me to even care about it. However, if I look at the idea of defending one’s wife, then I agree Will Smith had a right to be offended by the poor taste joke, but he responded inappropriately by bringing violence in answer to words, especially when the idea of the event was for Chris Rock to “roast” these people. Will Smith should have addressed the issue verbally, or afterwards, in private. Sometimes people go too far, and we have the right to call them out and give them a chance to apologize, not just smack them across the face.”
Taylor also said that even though he loves Smith that both are in the wrong, “Chris Rock was tasteless in his joke about her bald head, but I think Will Smith was 100% wrong in hitting him without giving a chance to apologize.”
Taylor said his love for Will Smith won’t change. He still loves the actor for his many accomplishments and his acting career. Even though many things came out that night, especially the underlying relationship problems between Smith and Jada, Taylor will still play Will Smith movies and not hide his love.
This situation may have tarnished Will Smith’s reputation, but at Weir High he will still have someone cheering him on.
