What We Do in the Shadows is just one in the day-in-the-life of vampire show in Staten Island, New York where there’s Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novakj), a warrior from Al Qauolundar, an English Noble known as Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), who is married to Nadja of Antipaxos (Natasia Demetriou); a Romani who lived her whole life in poverty, and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), a regular office worker. With them is Nandor’s servant Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillen), our former Panera Bread employee, who serves as the voice of reason among the 5 of them and a fan favorite.

We begin with Guillermo speaking to the cameramen (this is a fictional documentary) telling us of his duties, & his hope of becoming a vampire within the ratty looking manor that they all live in. This show isn’t just about him we also get to see all the characters soon after, everything from interviews and fights showing just how discouraging these folks can be. We’re never left wondering for too long when action happens when a letter comes from “The Baron,” (we’ll talk about him later) the favorite character of Jordyn Ferguson who thinks the show is “Amazing,” can’t blame her. The whole story inches along each episode with us believing it won’t be a part of the larger stories of anything, but revolves around Guillermo becoming closer to the vampires, and the vampires trying to adapt to their surroundings.

These creatures of the night must survive off people, but very rarely do we so what happens to the remains, but we find here what never sees the light of day. He’s almost a caretaker. With Guillermo telling us of the vampires we can’t help, but want to see more of them. Laszlo, Nandor, and Nadja have a tendency to fall upwards without any sense of self awareness, the exception being maybe Colin, and Guillermo.

The Baron is a barrel full of laughs, he plays with our hearts like a professional despite his terrifying appearance. We meet Gregor, Nadja’s lover who reincarnates every so often due to the occasional decapitation, and who else of course, but Nadja’s husband Laszlo to be the one to do it. There is a method to his madness though, Laszlo loves Nadja, and hates seeing her sad over Gregor not being able be the sum of all his past lives, which does cast some doubt on if Gregor is actually the one who has lived these lives or not.

The show as Rotten Tomatoes describes it is “Delightfully absurd and ridiculously fun,” USA Today says  “If you’re worried about vampires not being your thing, or the movie being better, I dare you to watch just the first episode,” this show simply has heart and is fun for anyone who watches if they want to see something that is funny and is different.
