This year the Varsity Board is making a comeback. Sean Blumette, Weir’s new athletic director, came in with big plans with one being the varsity board. The varsity board is an organization started by Dr. Vargo and the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. The varsity board is an opportunity to bring student athletes from various OVAC schools together. This is a noncompetitive environment for student athletes to be taught good leadership skills, build relationships with other students, and even get guidance and advice from other level athletes.
Mr. Bluemette explained why he’s making this organization come back. He stated, “I think exposure to any kind of to positive leadership examples to our student athletes is important.”
There are no set requirements for the varsity board. Weir’s varsity coaches, principals, and Bluemette select a variety of students from sports offered here. This year Bluemette thinks there should be about 15 to 20 students participating. There are four scheduled events to take place this year at the ECO center. Overall, the OVAC Varsity Board plays a crucial role in athletes’ excellence and sportsmanship, while shaping not just good athletes but future leaders.
