Weir high basketball teams brought home the trophy twice this year conquering our city rivals, Madonna.
The girls’ team came out with a big lead and did not intend to stop. Weir put up seventy-four points to the Madonna Blue Dons’ thirty points inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
Junior Mea Kaufman said they needed to get an early lead in the first half for them to win. Although the girls came out victorious, there is always room for improvement no matter what.
Kaufman says, “We need to work on rebounding, and communication during the game.” The girls record is 9-12, and things are looking hopeful for the rest of their season. Kaufman also says that the rest of the season should be pretty good, and that they have a good chance at going to regionals.
The boys traveled to Madonna to capture the title with 64 points at the end of the game and the Dons trailing by 56 giving Weir High the trophy.
Head coach Anthony Santangelo expressed that,” It was going to be a touch hard-nosed game. City rival is always intense and both teams were going to push themselves to the max the whole game. And with the big crowd, there were going to be a lot of ups and downs throughout the game.”
Santangelo always loves to motivate his team no matter if it’s in the middle of the game, at practice, or in a time out. At half time Santangelo said,” We had to make some adjustments and how we’re going to extend our lead in the second half. We told our players to keep being “US” and being ready to shoot and play better on the defensive end.”
The Red Riders came out victorious and took home the trophy. Santangelo claimed that,” The entirety of the game went well with the players and the students. I thought it was a great crowd, environment, and sportsmanship, and at the end we got the W.”
The boys basketball team is having a great season and the future looks promising for them. Santangelo says,” Were just going to keep preaching about being locked in, working hard, and being a great TEAM so we can keep winning and advancing. “
With both trophy’s back at Weir High, the boys go on to play Oak Glen in their first sectional game. The girls season came to an end at Oak Glen in their first game of the sectionals tournament. they ended with a 10-13 record. in an interview with Weirton daily Times Rick Stead said,” I’m proud of the effort our girls put in tonight.”
